Overall, this book has been a solid resource while taking calculus classes in college. Using it in combination with other resources, I nailed straight A''s despite not having taken a math class in 8 years.

TLDR: If you are a student, you''re probably required to get this, so just buy it because it''ll last you through most of the calculus classes that you''ll be taking unless you pursue even more advanced math. Anyone who is buying this should definitely use this in conjunction with other resources which I''ll mention at the bottom. If you are a self-study with no professor to reach out to looking for an all-in-one resource, I recommend staying away from this textbook. Honestly, the resources I''ll recommend at the bottom are probably sufficient for pretty much anyone interested in basic calculus.

Book Review:
It was clearly written by an expert. I mean that in both good and bad ways. When it works, it works quite well. There is a a lot of information and I had many of those lightbulb moments that have made me fall in love with calculus. Unfortunately, as often happens in the fields of math and science, the expert has an inability to think like the student. I have actually cursed out this book on multiple occasions. It suffers from proofs and explanations that skip steps that were probably deemed unnecessary or obvious by the writer. Seriously though, if there is one place to write out every little detail and explanation, it is in a proof in a textbook. The logical conclusions are sometimes hard to follow, especially with the diction that the author uses. Concepts are often explained with jargon and from an analytical standpoint and then there will be no follow-up connecting the concept to something concrete that the layperson can associate it with. The examples are a mixed bag. There were many examples that I couldn''t figure out how the answer was achieved because a step was skipped that I didn''t think about. In addition, the examples were almost always much easier than the majority of the questions associated with the section. Possibly the most annoying part is that it is not particularly well written, so, in the midst of all this jargon and these complex paragraphs, I lose track of which variable is being talked about by which statement and I have to read the same paragraph multiple times. Also, it is not formatted to be friendly to the written note-taker, using bold and italics to differentiate some variables from each other and other editing choices that are questionable.

Despite these gripes, it got the job done and I have seen much worse textbooks. Like I previously stated, when it works, it works well. Using alternative resources together with it made my experience much, much better.

Tips:
There is a website called Slader that is basically a place where people share how they solved problems in textbooks. It had the answers and explanations to every question that I encountered in the book. It is a great resource for checking homework and getting explanations for how things actually work in practice. Especially if you don''t have a professor or you have a professor that thinks they are teaching graduate students. I highly recommend that everyone using textbooks check this out, it is free.

During my first semester of calculus I discovered Paul''s Online Math Notes, which is a resource that is kept by a professor at Lamar University. It is free and I think he made it initially for his classes, but he has most of the same information as the textbook and I found his explanations to be much more clear and concise. Very helpful.

I got a book called The Calculus Lifesaver by Adrian Banner that is just awesome. It is smart, witty, has very clear and concrete explanations, and is surprisingly well-written. This helped me greatly during my second semester of calculus, but it doesn''t really go into multivariable calculus so it probably won''t be a huge help beyond introductory calculus. If you are a self-study that wants an all-encompassing resource to jump into calculus, I recommend this, hands down. It was less than $20 so still very cheap.

To other students and anyone interested, I highly recommend reading a few books on teaching. I am a physics tutor for my university and I read about teaching to prepare because I wanted to be a good tutor. As it turns out, I learned a lot that has actually made me a much better student.

Good luck with your calculus adventure and be patient. Calculus is fascinating once you get the hang of it and, in my opinion, makes math actually work. Not that math didn''t work before but... you''ll understand what I mean. It takes it to a whole new level.

James Stewart is putting out more updates than Tu-Pac, and is just as dead. This is a loose-leaf version of an overpriced college textbook, so it allowed me to only bring the chapters I would need of an otherwise HEAVY book. My bookbag, and my back, love that feature.

"I''m attending a university and we are using a textbook from another author (Calculus 2nd Edition by Briggs, Cochran, and Gillet). The book I am using for school that is required is not that great because it is written as if you know your math pretty well. What I mean is, you are suppose to know formulas you might have not seen before. With Stewart he explains where you get the formulas from.
I remember grabbing a Calculus textbook when I was taking the AP CAL AB course back in high school (2 years ago). I grabbed the Stewart textbook and calculus made sense after I read the chapters I needed to. I now own two different textbook. If you read the Stewarts Calculus textbook, calculus will make sense and you''ll understand the concepts. I use this as my official textbook instead of the one that we are suppose to use at my school that everyone is suppose to use. I have no problems with this textbook. The exercises and all are somewhat hard if you approach them without even reading the section. Please read chapter 1 because it makes calculus more understandable. Stewart is the best. I didn''t even know he was that popular. Calculus is also somewhat like geometry in the calculus 1 or AP CALC AB course."-My Son

P.S I bought this for my son.

Absolutely amazing introductory Calculus textbook! I have used this book for four Calculus classes and it has been superbly clear, illustrious, explicit, and sometimes entertaining. I particularly like Stewart''s treatment of each new theorem/topic via geometry, algebra, and plain words. This allows the student to more simply define the new concept in more ways than one, or the way that best suits them. My only complaint is the lacking of even problem solutions. However, online websites such as Chegg or Slader suffice, or are even better, considering they come with step-by-step solutions. If you are the wondrous student, oftentimes Stewart includes the proofs of new theorems or definitions, allowing the student to internalize more deeply the concept. I especially like the historic side notes in nearly every section i.e. history of different notations, Newton & Leibiniz, Cauchy, Rolle, Lagrange, etc. The most fundamental reason this text was a success for me was the increasing difficulty and explanation of example problems after the introduction of a new topic. Much mathematical literature introduces a new concept, and usually introduces hard examples first or even trick problems. This is not the way to initially understand a concept. Stewart will introduce easier examples and even introduce the exceptions or odd ball cases to every defintion afterwards. This way, the book teaches through progressively harder examples. If you are in search of a rigorous calculus textbook, this is a supplement to that rigorous textbook. It is introductory, and addresses mostly elementary situations (although addressing more relevant problems in the problems section), therefore perhaps Spivak''s Calculus may suit a more advanced or honors oriented class. Please please pick this book up! It is a gem for undergraduates!

This textbook is fantastic! So much information in one area, I just wish that there were more problems to practice with. I feel like I should be able to fully understand each concept, and I don''t have enough questions here to do so. An easy fix to this is to have the answers to the even problems, which doesn''t exist sadly. What is the point of solving challenging integrals if you are unsure of what the answer is?
