Product Description

“The popularity of [Dog Songs] feels as inevitable and welcome as a wagging tail upon homecoming.” —The Boston Globe

Mary Oliver’s Dog Songs is a celebration of the special bond between human and dog, as understood through the poet’s relationships to the canines that have accompanied her daily walks, warmed her home, and inspired her work. Oliver’s poems begin in the small everyday moments familiar to all dog lovers, but through her extraordinary vision, these observations become higher meditations on the world and our place in it.

Dog Songs includes visits with old friends, like Oliver’s beloved Percy, and introduces still others in poems of love and laughter, heartbreak and grief. Throughout, the many dogs of Oliver’s life merge as fellow travelers and as guides, uniquely able to open our eyes to the lessons of the moment and the joys of nature and connection.

Review

Dog Songs . . . is a sweet golden retriever of a book that curls up with the reader.” — The New York Times

“Oliver . . . is one of our most adored poets, and a longtime lover of dogs. The popularity of [Dog Songs] feels as inevitable and welcome as a wagging tail upon homecoming.” — The Boston Globe

“Mary Oliver is a canine lover par excellence. Her combo of woman’s best friend and poetry is utterly irresistible.” —Oprah.com

“Mary Oliver’s Dog Songs is, plainly put, a lovely and accessible book of poems.” —The Rumpus

“Oliver’s capacity for simple ecstasy in response to the natural world remains. The new Dog Songs turns . . . material about canines into something meaningful.” —Time Out

“The set of poems all feature dogs, a species much beloved by the poet; she writes of her canine companions with as much awe and reverence as she does other miraculous beasts and natural phenomena. They read as embodiments of the natural order, comprehending the cycle of life and death in ways no human can.” —Bust Magazine

Dog Songs collects her most soul-stirring poems and short prose celebrating that special human-canine relationship and what it reveals about the meaning of our own lives—a beautiful manifestation of Oliver’s singular sieve for extracting from the particularities of the poetic subject the philosophical universalities of the human condition to illuminate what it means to live a good life, a full life, a life of purpose and presence.” —Brain Pickings

“The collection invites us to linger awhile in the pure happiness Oliver feels toward dogs, most notably, her beloved dog Percy . . . For Oliver, nature is our teacher and dogs some of the best professors.” —Bookish, The Houston Chronicle

“Renowned for her love of nature, Ms. Oliver writes exquisite, lyrical poems that . . . remind the reader of how much there is to love in this world. Nowhere is this love more evident than in Oliver’s latest collection, Dog Songs . . . These poems will make you smile, laugh, cry and nod your head in delighted agreement.” —The Bark

The 11 pen & ink illustrations are lovely. The 35 "Dog Songs and One Essay" are tributes to the individual dogs Mary Oliver has known and loved. But none of them touched my heart like a wonderful dog poem by Dalia Shevin, titled,

In My Good Death:

I will find myself in high summer grass.
The humming shock of the golden light.
And I will hear them before I see them
and know right away who is bounding across the field to meet me.
All my good dogs will come then, their wet noses bumping against my palms,
their hot panting, their rough, faithful tongues.
Their eyes young and shiny again.
The dense scruff of their fur,
The unspeakable softness of their bellies,
their velvet ears against my cheeks.
I will bend to them, my face covered with their kisses,
My hands full of them.
In the grass I will let them knock me down."

Mary Oliver''s poetry is down to earth, expressive, and generous in spirit. This book which is no exception. In reading it one can feel the emotions that flow through her writing, even in the poem about the loss of her dog, Percy. In her own unique way Mary Oliver has a way of bringing to light subjects that if we all considered, the world could be a better place; subjects like do we listen or do we really listen to others which is discussed in the poem, Ricky Talks About Talking. Whether or not one is a dog lover, this book is worthy of reading.

This is an incentive for a friend who is receiving it to sit down and write poetry as she used to do..a motivator for her. After all, if a dog can write this well, just think of what she might do.

This might not be Oliver''s strongest collection, but that would be an extremely high standard to meet. At its best, "Dog Poems" is accessible, crisp, and able to reveal depths of meaning with the alacrity and openness which is characteristic of Oliver''s most interesting poetry over the years. However, the continuing focus on dogs seems a little cumbersome if one is trying to read the book from cover to cover. Rather, this is a collection to read in snippets, preferably with one''s canine companions in sight. Any dog lover will be touched, humored, and excited by this collection at various times. Any longtime reader of Oliver will be glad to re-encounter Percy, of course, and can also look forward to getting to know other dogs and the thoughts they inspire as well.

The illustrations deserve to be give attention as well... they catch the expressiveness and godliness of their subjects quite well, and add to the fulfillment offered by this book to anyone who loves dogs, and all that they can teach us.

If you know someone who is inconsolable over the loss of their dog, or someone who just plain loves their dog, this is the present to buy them - even if they are the least poetic, dour Scotsman or unromantic Yorkshireman. I''m a Philistine - I''d never heard of Mary Oliver until I read a review of this book. I rarely read poetry. However, I do have a dog, my first ever, and I''m amazed at how he has opened my eyes to nature, to happiness, and to the friendliness of other people and dogs (not to mention sheep, cows, horses, alpacas and geese). I wish I knew what he was scenting when he''s out on the moors and why he insists on lying in the coldest, frostiest patch of grass when the wind is blowing me over. The poems in this book go a little way to explaining what goes on in a dog''s mind, and a good way into explaining why dogs mean so much to dog lovers.

I''m sorry, I love Mary Oliver''s work and I love her too, but I was disappointed with this book, so much so that I gave it away a few days after receiving it. I was beguiled by the cover; it''s a beautifully presented book with lovely illustrations but her writings aren''t satisfying. Mary''s Dog Songs are more prose than poetry, with some essays; comments and observations. It''s not that I was expecting or wanting poetry, I just didn''t find any of it particularly inspiring or any different from anything that anyone else may have written about dogs. I''m a huge dog fan; my dogs are the greatest joy in my life, and I''m also a fan of poetry and good literature, which is why I bought this book, but I feel it as a let down. Sorry Mary.
