I had bought this book when it first came out and came back hoping to find a kindle version. I was reading some of the negative reviews and thy have it all wrong. Some are claiming it is outdated, I am assuming because it was printed in 1997 and a lot of new name pigments are out there now that are not in this book. No matter what the pigment name is that was given by the manufacturer it is assigned a standard number as to the pigment makeup that the manufacturer can not change and must be given to inform the buyer. The property of that number does not change thru time. If there are any changes then it would no longer be the same pigment and would have a different number. THIS IS YOUR X-RAY VISION as to the quality of the product. All new colors offered today are still made up of the basic pigment compound listed in this book. Manufacturers add new colors or change the name of a pigment for marketing purposes, don''t be fooled. If you want to make sure you are getting your moneys worth and have lasting work get this book pronto.

Absolutely the best book to get for understand watercolor paint and how brands try to deceive you. This author gives an easy read on how to decide which paints to buy because "professional or artist" quality is not cheap and before you know you are over $100 easy.

Also talks about how brands will try to get you to think that you have to stay with only 1 brand, which is hogwash and cannot mix. Gives accurate light-fast ratings and composition of the paint and manufacturing. She also dives into how it reacts wet on wet and wet on dry.

A must have for anyone who is serious about watercolor and wants to make sure to buy the best they can afford and have it actually be the best and not hype!!

Books to understanding color in order to get how different colors work against or for each other:

For any Artist:

1. Color Mixing Bible, by Ian Sidaway
This book explains how to mix different colors in order to get either a new color or an effect that you want.

PANTONEs Guide to Communicating with color by Eiseman.

It is a great book to use to understand the psychology behind color and how it is used to
communicate a mood or feeling. Let''s face it, Marketing does this all the time and it can also
be used as a guide when deciding what hues you want to use in your artwork. I love this book, it
is a great reference for me and also has some surprising color combinations that I would
never have thought of.

2. "COLOR WORKS, the Crafters Guide to Color" by Deb Menz

FOR ANYONE who wants to know about COLOR THEORY this text breaks it down so that ANYONE can understand this complex subject. I learnt more about color theory in this book than all others put together because I now "Understand" the concept. While this book is for the textile artist, ALL artists should get it and it also has cut outs to use when choosing your colour palette whether it be for Fashion Design or Art.

Hilary Page''s "Guide to Watercolor Paints" is an absolute must-have for any serious watercolor artist. The book explains the characteristics of individual pigments, the combination of pigments and other components of the paints sold by virtually all the major manufacturers, and discusses the difference between student and professional grades (and which brands provide which grade). Then the options for each color are compared in such a way as to show not only each paint''s overall appearance on paper but its behavior when applied wet-into-wet. The author also provides not only the manufacturer''s permanence rating but her own (based on her own light-fastness tests) and an overall rating. She also provides a few key examples of how various pigments typically interact with others.

Because there is continual change in the availability of pigments and paints, as well as new brands, which can quickly cause any book to become outdated, the author provides updates on her website [...] to provide more recent information. The updates cannot stand alone; but you can rely on the book to provide a good, in-depth starting point, covering most of the currently available options.

Serious artists will quickly recoup the cost of this book by making better-informed decisions on the selection and purchase of paints, avoiding the losers and homing in on only the best alternatives for their purposes.

Others have expressed their admiration for this book, and I am in full accord. Perhaps it''s not for everyone, given that some artists prefer to gain understanding by direct experience rather than reading about paints or relying on someone else, which is perfectly legitimate. But for anyone with a "scientific" turn of mind, it''s a fascinating book. It gave me much to consider that I hadn''t thought about before. My only complaint is that a lot of new paints have come out since the book was published. Hilary Page does have a web page that includes updates, but having everything together in an updated book would be nice. (I realize this would be a huge amount of work, though.)

I recently purchased Page''s Guide and I''m delighted that I did. Firstly, the book came autographed and with several appended additions to information. Page''s dedication to accuracy and clarity is impressive. Secondly, the book has a remarkable amount of information about all the brands of watercolor paint available in the U.S. relating to lightfastness, transparency, granularity, opacity, and so on, and the colors are actually shown in the book. Unlike other writers of watercolor paint guides, she uses all the colors in her book, which makes it sigificantly more interesting to review and read. Lastly, I take painting lessons from a nationally-known artist who has also published books relating to watercolor painting and color, and she recommends Page''s book over others. I had already purchased Page''s book, so I was thrilled to hear another expert give it praise.

I rate Page''s Guide with four stars because I believe there is always more we can know about art, and Page may decide there''s a more detailed edition she needs to publish, and also because actual publication printing inks are not as accurate in depicting colors as seeing the actual watercolor paint on watercolor paper. But for anyone contemplating purchasing Page''s Guide, I highly recommend it.

Book needs to be up-dated.

This is one of the best books in publication on watercolor paints in print. The down side is that this book was published in 1996 and the information contained may be out-of-date as the manufactures do make changes in their manufacturing.

This book is great! It explains everything you want to know about the nature and behavior of pigments. Hilary does a superb job of rating the quality of each paint manufacturer''s products. Her information is accurate and very useful. I now understand a great deal more about the paints I''m using. After buying this book I changed my pallet to single pigment paints and no longer mix mud. I no longer waste money on dissapointing tubes of color.
Of all the books on watercolor I''ve read and own, this one has become my bible!
