François-Régis Gaudry is the author of Let’s Eat France! and a food critic and host of the show On va déguster on the French public radio channel Inter France. He is also a food journalist at L’Express and the host of Très très bon on French television channel Paris Première. He lives in Paris. Find him on Instagram @frgaudry.

I own well over 100 French cookbooks from every region of France and her overseas territories. I didn''t think I needed another one. Yet, when I came across "Let''s Eat France", I was mesmerized and ordered it on the spot. It reflects a depth of knowledge and a degree of erudition about French food that puts it into a category of its own. I didn''t really buy it for its recipes, most of which I already have, but for the background it offers about dishes and ingredients and, more generally, about French food culture. I also fell in for the artful way in which the information is presented. It''s not a long-winded text but a refreshing assemblage of creative graphics and pictures that turns each page into its own mini-voyage of discovery. This is a book that one can open at any page and get immediately captivated by the contents. There is literally something to be learned from each page, even for those well-versed into French gastronomy. It''s quite a unique contribution to its subject that I highly praise and recommend.

This book is huge! I bought it in hardback so it sits on my coffee table as it is double the size of a standard cook book and won’t fit on my cook book shelf! As another reviewer said, this is a dip in and out book, it has a wealth of knowledge on most if not all French foods, but it isn’t in any particular order, so it’s a rather nice (if a little heavy) afternoon read with a cuppa or an early aperitif, and there are recipes and history on various foods, writers, chefs, makers, etc etc. It’s good as a reference book, and gives you insight into the origins of some of your favourite or most well known French foods. It would make a lovely gift for a Francophile, just make sure they’ve got room for it!
