Okay let''s get this out of the way, these headphones are gorgeous and just a beauty to look at. I would have to look very hard to find anyone that would disagree with me regarding the look of these cans. I will break this review into 4 parts: aesthetic, build quality, comfort, and sound.

Aesthetic: as mentioned before, these are very good looking headphones. Just from the look alone, ones can tell that Master & Dynamic has put much thought into designing the MH40, making sure that the design translates to the user. Aside from being a tool to listen to music, I think these are also a fashion statement for many people who like to stand out from the crowd (especially the tan/silver color scheme). These are probably the best looking headphones at any price point. Note that they offer these in many colors and should appeal to many individuals.

Build quality: unfortunately, I have to take one star off of the review due to the build quality. Let me be transparent and upfront, the build quality is solid overall, but suffers from a few issues. The first pair I received had a loose adjustment hinge that keeps slipping around; this affects the fit of the headphones. The second pair was much better but not sure how well they will hold up over time. If you are individuals who constantly adjust their headphone band, it might wear out over time. The sliding metal rod is simply held together by a rubber gasket. Another problem I experienced with the 2nd pair is the fact that the magnetic ear pads keep sliding around and are not tightly attached to the metal housing. I am sure it won''t fall off, but an annoyance regardless. I believe this is because the three alignment rods holding the leather pads are a bit short and cause the pads to have a little play. I''ll have to see how well these parts will hold up through time.

Comfort: given how heavy these headphones are, they are actually very comfortable over longer listening sessions. This is thanks to the super soft lamb skin ear pads. Also, the clamping force of these headphones are not too tight and won''t slip around while on your head. I wear glasses and still find it comfortable enough to listen to about 2 hours at a time. I cannot say the same about other over-ear headphones such as the Beats Studio 2 Wireless. They are almost as comfortable as the Sennheiser Momentum M2 over-ear, which are the most comfortable I''ve used to date. You might have to play with the positioning while they are on your head to get the best comfort and sound.

Sound: Okay, the sound quality of these headphones is what REALLY got me. I didn''t expect a fashion oriented headphone company would make such great sounding headphones. These are the most balance sounding headphones I''ve had, as compared to the Beats Studio 2 Wireless, B&W P5, and the Sennheiser Momentum M2. The lows are very well defined and never mask any other frequency range. The bass make its present but never overwhelming. The midrange is not overly exaggerated like the Sennheiser Momentum and not as bright also. Treble is where these shines for me. They are airy sounding and not piercing at all. Overall, the sound signature of these headphones lean towards the darker side and sound very intimate. Furthermore, they are good for extended listening since they are not fatiguing. They sound similar to the B&W P7, but a bit darker. One thing they can improve on is the soundstage presentation. While the soundstage is realistic and convincing, it is not as wide as the Sennheiser or the B&W P7. But at the end of the day, I think the M&D MH40 is well suited for many music genre and will give listeners a well balanced listening experience. If you ever listen to Sonus Faber speakers, these headphones sound exactly like them.

Conclusion: these headphones are surely geared towards higher end fashion oriented individuals who also appreciate great sound. From an audiophile point of view, these headphones are a great tool to a great musical experience without sacrificing aesthetic.

***Note: I used my MacBook Pro Retina, iPhone 7 plus, and Fiio K1 to power these headphones.

Overall, these are well executed, beautiful headphones, but they are not exceptional sound reproduction devices. IMHO they are not nearly as good in the clarity, effortless reproduction and neutrality of even the middle tier headphones from AKG or Sennheiser, HifiMan, etc. and I can''t recommend them due to the sound quality.

My normal headphones are AKG 712s or old Shure E4 IEM''s. I reviewed these with an LG V30 with a quad DAC and Fiio portable headphone amplifier.

First the fit - I have an abnormally large head. XXL hats are almost big enough. Of a lot of headphones I have auditioned recently these almost did not fit due to the limited travel. Also, while they are in fact "over the ear" design, this is just barely true. They will touch all of your ear unless you have small ears.

The band comfort is pretty much what you''d expect from the pics. There is enough spring to give a constant tight fit, but no padding on the noggin. If you are at all sensitive to that, move along, not going to be comfortable for long term wear for you. The studio style AKGs you can wear all day long and not notice by comparison.

The choice to go with barely big enough pads also makes them really good noise blocking headphones. These are really nice for offices and noisy environments for those who don''t like IEMs.

Now, the tonal balance. I started writing this review in a very positive light. Good noise blocking cans that are a little too laid back. When I switched to the AKGs though I realized that no, these are not really good sounding cans at all, certainly not at full retail. The tight ear seal gives you unusually good bass, with maybe a touch extra boom, and yeah, a lot of AKG models lack bass, but the bad is that to me, the mid to treble is noticeably low by comparison to my other two pairs. I''m listening to Chet Baker''s Milano Sessions and the trumpet is just too low and lacks any of the sweet detail to be enjoyable. Switching to the AKGs it was night and day. Across the entire spectrum the AKGs demonstrate how congested and sluggish these headphones sound. The MH40 don''t replay music so much as murmur. The best example I can give is listening to a speaker with a bad tweeter. It''s really that bad.

I really can''t recommend the purchase and I have no idea why any reviewer would call the treble "crisp." Seriously? Not the pair I got.

First thing''s first: these headphones seem to have a 50/50 shot at making you completely happy. "What the heck does that mean?" you ask; let me explain. Some folks, like myself, will have to regrettably, and with sorrow, send these headphones back to Amazon. I suspect that others, perhaps like you, will find my complaints don''t really apply, and you absolutely love these headphones. With that being said, let''s start the review.

From the moment I saw these online, I wanted to love these headphones. I mean, I scoured the web for every video, searched Instagram for photos; I was all in on wanting these to be great. And the first impression upon them arriving was awesome. When other reviews talk about how wonderfully made these are, they are not lying. Probably the most impressively built cans I have ever seen; the aluminum is reminiscent of an Apple MacBook, the leather looks beautiful (I bought the tan and silver version), and there are absolutely no creaks like some headphones I own. Even the adjustment rods could bring a smile to your face, the way they so smoothly operate. So yeah, these things look and feel impressive, and I absolutely cannot fault them for their craftsmanship. The only area they did skimp on was the included cables. I''ve seen videos of the original generation of MH40''s, and those cables looked amazing with metal end pieces. These are tiny plastic pieces, nothing impressive. I suspect that this is due to the price dropping substantially, so it''s not really a true criticism. And, it''s pretty easy to swap out the cables for any 3.5mm cord you would want to use instead.

They block a fair amount of outside noise, and the sound is pretty dang nice for such a fashion oriented headphone. Not the most analytical sounding headphone I have, but they sound pleasant, have a nice clarity across the board, with an emphasis on the low end. Honestly, these cans are able to accurately reproduce sub bass frequencies that are pretty much inaudible to the human ear, yet these things pump them out and make your ear drum flex. The only real downside I noticed was a slight rattle in the right speaker, specifically during loud bass and only at certain frequencies (I work on music production software and noticed this using a sub bass synth). Totally unlike my OCD self, I was willing to look past this small issue since the majority of the time I''m not blasting my music, and it wasn''t too terribly in your face. There were others issues I couldn''t look past though...

Well, remember how I talked about the adjustment rods? If your head is too big, and mine almost was, these simply won''t fit. I mean, I had the rods all the way out, and I had to slide these more toward the front of my head to get them to fit "properly". I say "properly" because they still didn''t feel amazing. I wear a size 7 7/8 to 8 in fitted hats, so plan accordingly. It really boggles my mind why they didn''t add about a centimeter more length to the rods. But on to the next complaint...

These things seal around your ears. I don''t mean they "sort of" seal, where ambient noise is reduced, no: these things feel like a suction cup going around your ears. Which means (for me, my opinion) the entire time you wear these you have a very odd, pressurized feeling in both of your ears. This is probably where the sub bass mastery comes from, but my goodness...I will admit, I am much more sensitive to this pressurized feeling (I don''t know why, I just am), so this may not be so noticeable to you. Then again, moving to almost any other headphone after wearing the MH40 feels like a relief. The longest I wore these cans was about 2.5 hours straight, and hours later I felt as if my ears were still recovering. That, and the ear pads aren''t really that large. I don''t have huge ears, but it felt as if my ears touched all over the edge of the inside of the pads. Not the worst feeling in the world, but that, coupled with the big-head-bad-fit, and the ear pressurization meant I was always fidgeting with these to get more comfortable. Oh, and they''re pretty darn heavy. What I''m trying to say is, you will NOT forget that you are wearing these.

Geez, it seems I really ripped into these guys. Which is a true shame, because I feel like if my head was smaller, and they didn''t have that insane pressure on the ear canal, I probably would have kept them. Which is why I gave them 3 (2.5) stars. It seems to be a total coin flip on this one. Some of the best looking, most well made headphones I have ever seen and used, with a really nice sound to match. I honestly don''t know whether or not you will like them, which isn''t a great way to end a review designed to help you decide. For me, the overall discomfort led me to send them back. Because if there''s one thing I''ve learned in all my years of trying, buying, and using headphones: if it isn''t comfortable for you, it''s not worth it.

That said, I really hope they work for you, and heck, I hope the company does well and sticks around; they truly know how to build a set of headphones. With some tweaks, this could be one killer headset. Anyway, I do hope this has helped anyone out there who might be struggling to make a decision.

Please note part of my review being so low is the new Amazon return code process. That being said the best I could give these beautiful cans is a three star due to a design flaw.
The craftsmanship is impeccable. No plastic. Beautifuly designed with a major flaw, they won’t stay on my head. The Adjustment mechanisms should have been locking but it slips. There is not enough clamping pressure or the ear pads are too small. All I know is they spent more time on form than on function. The sound was overall good and I would of kept them but the constant fiddling to try and keep them on took the fun out,
The return process, one star. First they gave me a return code that the local staples couldn’t use (wasted hour). The closest ups is a 35 min drive. I finally was able to get someone to get me a label I could print. Drove back to the staples. Got my refund but instead of going into my bank it was a gift card. When the person changed the return so I could print the label the switched to a credit instead or a refund that I can use anywhere. What a terrible experience.

I''ve got into the audiophile level of headphones with the Grado sr80 and I loved them all except two things. 1. Bass was lacking and they were a tad uncomfortable. So I decided to take the plunge and upgrade to the Grado 325i. The Bass improved but they were still uncomfortable but hey the Sound was awesome. So I then bought the Sennheiser Momentum on ear headphones because I wanted a closed back set of cans as an alternative. Very comfortable but the sound was lacking in my opinion for the price. So after much research and listening in stores I settled on these.

For closed back headphones they''re very open from a soundstage standpoint. Not grado open but very clear. The Highs are crystal without being too pronounced. The mids are good but I prefer the Mids on the Grado 325 a bit better. The base is very nice, it''s got good punch, nice lowend rumble without being boomy like someothers. "I''m Looking at you Beats"''
They''re more comfortable than the Grados which start to hurt after about an hour. These are good up to 3 or 4 before they get a little on the heavy side but that''s a good thing. They''re built like tanks and about as heavy so that''s where the problem come in with that but I can live with it. So these for me are my best all around headphones but the question is what are you willing to pay? These are better than the Grado''s in my opinion but only because they work better on a wider randge of music than the Grado''s. Grados tend to do better with Rock, classical and jazz and struggle a little with anything else. These do everything pretty well. I wish the middle frequencies were a little more defined like the grado''s but I''m good. The deal is the Grado''s were $300 while these have a $400 price tag. Sorry but they are not $100 better but If you can find these for $300 or less definately pick them up you won''t be sorry.

This is the third pair of "good" headphones I''ve purchased in less than a year. The NAD headphones ($399) looked cool, but had a very mediocre sound quality (the designer apparently attempted to make them sound like living room speakers, which wasn''t a great sound, in my humble opinion). The headband adjustment broke the second time I put them on my head, so I returned them. Then I went with the Bowers & Wilkins PX (also $399), which had outstanding materials and build quality, and even better sound quality. Unfortunately, the Bluetooth wireless functionality didn''t work, and they kept shutting off every second or two, literally 30 or 40 times in a row, every time I tried to use them. And each time, they would power down and I''d have to power up and pair again, over and over. I sent them in for repair, and they sent me a new pair, which to me said they agreed that there was an issue, but that they were unable to resolve it. The second pair sounded great at first . . . then they started doing the exact same thing. I tried the recommended firmware updates, but still had the problem. Eventually, I returned them. The reason I''m mentioning that here is because Amazon buried my critical review of the B&W PX headphones, and I think potential buyers should know that there could be a glitch with the PX headphones. My third choice was the Master & Dynamic MH40 in brown leather and silver metal ($299 just a month or two ago, now $199). These look very nice, and the materials and build quality are outstanding for the price point. And the closer you look, the more impressive they are, in terms of build quality and top notch materials. I like them a lot, but I have four fairly minor criticisms/observations: 1) The sound quality is nice, but definitely not in the class of the B&W PX . . . then again, they don''t cost as much; 2) They don''t stay on my head if I bend over even a little bit; 3) The ear cups are probably too soft, so they tend to twist a bit on my head because the front of the ear cup is too squishy; 4) They come with a long braided cord and a shorter braided cord with a mic and volume control, which appear to be top notch quality, but the control on the shorter cord doesn''t seem to work. In spite of these criticisms, I would still rate these very highly, between 4 and 4.5 stars. The main thing I like about these is the look and build quality. I wish the sound quality was better at lighter volumes, but it actually gets better at louder volumes, which I''ve found is not usually the case with most headphones. All in all, I like these a lot for the price point, and I find that I don''t miss the wireless and noise cancellation features as much as I expected.

The build on these headphones show a significant attention to detail. These people are serious about building a device that will last a lifetime. Making them unique looking in a sea of style over substance includes the style with the substance. Sound quality is very good. I am not an audiophile which I think is a weird trend. But, I do appreciate the sound stage on these. Though, you need to know: if you are using these with a music service like Amazon or any of the others, the sound quality will definitely sound flat across the board. You need to get a decent .mp3 quality though I''m not positive you need to do .flac. I use the app Poweramp with a great pre-amp and equalizer. That changed everything.

You will notice that the bass does not thump. It''s not supposed to unless it''s meant to in the studio. Voice, instrumentation, percussion, where the sounds are coming from, and the mids, highs... all that bursts to life when you adjust the sound to what you like. For instrumentation and percussion, my test song is "Spaceman" by DMB. For vocals, nearly any song by Tracy Chapman, but most specifically "Happy". She controls her voice in low register and near whisper with perfection in that song. It''s perfect in quality and perfect in performance. I''ve always tested headphones to these two songs and M&D blew my mind.

I got the brown leather for $200 after these sat in my list for nearly 2 years. I would have paid $400 but glad I didn''t. I am the guy who will never pay $500 for headphones; no judgement it''s just not me. I would love to match these up to more expensive pairs, but I don''t need to. These are perfect for me.

These are my favorite headphones I''ve ever owned and used, and have been my daily drivers since October 2017, so I now feel confident enough in my opinion of them. I''ll also say that I don''t write reviews that often so forgive me if my format isn''t incredible, and I''m not great at describing things.

To start I''ll talk about the styling/form: these headphones are absolutely beautiful without being too in-your-face, a very understated style with very nice materials. The lambskin pads are a delight, and I personally don''t experience any fatigue when wearing them (even after listening to music for 4+ hours). The one gripe I do have about the actual design element is that they are very heavy - no fatigue for me but I do like to listen to music about an hour before going to sleep and I can''t listen lying on my back because they slip off, and whenever I''m doing anything I have to be a little cautious so as not look down too quickly (they are both heavy and have a swivel function - dinged them within the first week of ownership)
Not a tremendous amount of noise bleeds in either, though there is some.

Now onto the reliability: I have not experienced a single problem with these headphones at all - and I''m clumsy with everything (I typically go through a pair of headphones once every 3-4 months). Perhaps that''s because these are genuinely my favorite headphones and I''m much more cautious with them, or that they are just built really well (which is true).

On phone use, I use a Galaxy S8+ and it drives the headphones adequately - for music which I want to be louder; R&B, rap, etc. I would want it to be a little louder. Any other device or music player would work excellently with even the most basic of amps. That''s not to say they''re quiet on the phone, because they''re certainly not, just not as loud as I would like for some genres.

Now onto the important part - the sound.
What do I even say? F*@#ing phenomenal. I''ll start by saying that these headphones are for, for lack of a better term, the more playful audiophile. They''re not perfect from a sound engineers perspective or a genuine hardcore audiophile - but for someone like me, an audiophile that prefers colorful sound, they''re perfect (though that''s not to say they''re not audiophile friendly, they''re phenomenal for anyone including true audiophiles). They are powerful, lows, mids, and highs are all punchy and vibrant, everything is there and beautifully proportioned. The low end is nice and full, without being overpowering, and doesn''t in any way interfere with any other range. The mids are perfect and did not go neglected, and the highs are clear and vibrant. Voices are nice and clear, very accurate. You can hear each independant detail on these headphones, which is awesome, and the sound range is wide - but not too wide and open that nothing feels to be in harmony. There is nothing that feels amiss, nothing that doesn''t work quite right, I''ve never owned a pair of headphones that are literally a delight every time I put them on, and I never go without being satisfied. And I have owned a plethora of high quality headphones (and borrowed a couple of headphones + dacs and amps that I couldn''t dream to afford)

I listen to every genre there is out there, there isn''t a single genre that these headphones don''t work with. Jazz, lofi hiphop, metal, folk, classical, contemporary, ambient - it works with everything and will not let you down at all.

F$%!king hell, I love these cans.

I have just received these wonderful, superb headphones the MH40 and cannot find enough superlatives to describe them! The build quality is outstanding and the sound fabulous! The whole spectrum of highs, mids, lows is beautifully balanced and these headphones are just in a class of their own! As soon as I opened the box, beautifully packed I knew these were special! The build quality is totally wonderful and I have had these on my head an hour or so and they are fabulously comfortable [and I am a medium sized lady owner] and they don''t feel heavy at all! That said the solid build is great and the luxurious leather and metal components add a touch of retro luxury to the whole package! I think the soft carry bag is great for travelling and I can easily source a wood or metal box if I want though the nice solid box they arrive in with moulded fittings should be fine for most people''s home storage I would think? I have glasses on as I type and the seal is solid and no leakage at all These headphones are amazing value for money! I tried two other types in the £100 plus bracket and both were faulty and had to go back and I am so glad I decided to push the boat out and spend just over £300 on these! Worth every penny! Buy these and you won''t regret it! One final point, I noted that someone said in their review that they scratched the metal edge of the rim with the serrated part that adjusts for your ears so I have solved that possible tiny problem by sticking two little felt pads on the back of the serrated bit so it touches the edge softly and won''t scratch! I have also instantly ordered an extra set of ear pads in navy from the Master and Dynamic website to change the look of the headphones which is so easy with the magnetic fit of the pads which is another very nice touch and shows the depth of research from the makers I can''t fault these lovely retro looking headphones! As you can gather from the five stars [wish I could give ten] I am just bowled over with these truly magnificent headphones A two year guarantee is given too which is longer than most I have found from a little research but I expect these to last forever!! They are certainly built to do so!! Buy them and you will see just why I am raving about them!! This is by the way an unsolicited review and I paid full price for my headphones!

Now I have owned a lot of headphones. I have great quality hifi gear..not McIntosh high end, but Rega, Bowers & Wilkins, Marantz to give an idea, and am a massive audiophile..not nerdy tho!! So I waited to review these until they were burnt in a bit. I also played them thru a Samsung Galaxy A71 just to see. Tried on both with Enigma''s Principles of Lust off the album. Cannot see how there is any negative points! Thru my hifi system they sound immense, bass, mid range etc just incredible clarity, response and perfection. On my phone damn good, but not enough power to drive them as they should be, but still amazing. So not only amazing sound quality, but they look amazing as well. I have the Leica SE version. Just gorgeous, superb detail and quality, and the M&D stand to go with them is just a thing of beauty like the cans. My advice..buy them. Way better than anything else IMO. Thanks for reading...oh and I like rock, jazz and a lot of other stuff.

I bought these mainly because I hate plastic headphones and I wanted something with a solid build quality. I chose correctly. The bass isn''t very powerful, so if you like that, you''ll hate these. This is for people who appreciate a warm balanced sound that is more accurate. I bought these for video editing where I need to listen to and monitor my sound, and for that they are brilliant. One thing I didn''t expect is the 3D sound effect where I really get a sense of direction and distance, it blew me away. The packaging is top quality and the little leather box and canvas dust bag was a beautiful touch. The whole thing oozes quality, luxury and premium design. The cons: The volume button on the cable only works with apple products, I have android. The middle pause/play button does work though. The over ear cans have been designed for the lowest profile possible, which means the beautiful lambskin covers are quite thin walled and this increases pressure. So after a couple hours you will probably want to take a break. These are heavy due to the materials (which I like), so if I put my head all the way back or all the way forward, they start to slide off (without actually coming off). I you were laying back on a pillow however, you would be fine. Recommended.

Good sound, very uncomfortable
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 19, 2021
These are stylish headphones and the build quality is good. They also sound good for the money. My biggest gripe is they are so uncomfortable and keep falling off my head all the time. They are also very heavy and totally unsuitable for using out and about.
