About me: Sysadmin who has dabbled in cloud and has a general understanding of key cloud concepts; have not married myself to or specialized in using any particular provider. Looking to change that by obtaining architect-tier certifications for AWS and GCP - starting with GCP.

I received this book on June 13th, finished reading through it June 25th, and scheduled my exam for the 29th. Until I sit for the exam, I''m studying with the practice exam engine (included), and reviewing the official GCP documentation for the obscure tidbits of information (IAM roles, service limitations, gcloud command options).

Considering that I scored well on the chapter review questions (avg 90% per chapter, 93% cumulative) and this [OFFICIAL] study guide covers all exam objectives, I feel confident that the worst possible outcome is that I will barely pass the exam. Best case, I''ll knock it out with ease. I''ll update this review with my result (PASS/FAIL).

If you have a background and motive similar to mine, I would suggest using this book, the practice exam engine, and GCP documentation as resources to prepare yourself for the GCP ACE Exam. Others might suggest using ACloudGuru, LinuxAcademy, or some free courses to prepare but I found that this book and official docs were enough.

Post-exam edit: Passed on first attempt (6/29). Scores aren’t given, but I’ve read somewhere that around 80% (40/50) is the cut. The questions on the exam were somewhat similar to the testing engine and end-of-chapter review questions. Again, I only used this book, official documentation, and made heavy use of the testing engine (400+ questions, including book’s review questions). Your experience may vary, but I would suggest getting familiar with the format of gcloud commands, basic kubectl commands, the limitations and capabilities of GCP’s services, and IAM.

I would say that the guide in general will give you a high level understanding of the different components of GCP. To understand more and be successful in the Exam, you will have to read through GCP docs, their use cases and other sources of materials.

Couple of things to be aware of:
Know that Google is continuously updating and changing GCP and what''s stated in the guide may not be the most current. Ex.(As of this writing, you can have up to 96 vCPUs. Cloud Functions supports runtime: Node.js 6(deprecated), Node.js 8, Node.js 10(beta), Python 3, Go 1.11).

Questions that come with the study have answers which are usually pretty obvious. In the actual exam, it is less so and you will have to read both the questions and answer choices carefully.

You will be tested on elements for specific services that go more in depth than the guide does, so make sure you go through multiple sources of materials. To name a few: (point in time recovery for Cloud SQL, difference between read replica and failover replica, GKE Auto-Upgrades, signed urls, best practices for accessing VMs and ssh key management)

Update: 17JUL19
Passed the Google Cloud Certified Associate Cloud Engineer exam yesterday.
Using both the digital version at home, and using the book while away from home. I went through the digital version twice. First time through was a rough reading, I knew I was not going to retain everything I read. My second time through, I started making a word doc chapter by chapter typing all the commands (gcloud, bq, gsutil,...) and what each command did (I often went into Google and got other commands to add to my word doc). Did the practice questions at Wiley''s at the end of each chapter. Did the practice questions at Google for this exam. I had a GCP account (free $300 for 365 days). GCP has tons of how-to-guides, and Quick-Starts for all services. I used Coursera, and have had a Plurasight account for sometime. The only thing I was concerned about, was I over studying. I put the exam off twice finally said enough.

Update 21MAY19:
I am over half way through the book and have found this material to have (so far) solidified my knowledge of the subject matter. I am now getting the feeling that I can offer up real world solutions. I need the underlying knowledge (nitty gritty so to speak) to understand fully the higher level concepts. So far this book is giving that information.
Having gotten a little over half through the book.

This is not on the Material (yet). I purchased the book as well as the digital version. However the digital version does not read like the way they have it for pre-view. It is a smooth scroll. for the pre-view however once you get it on the computer you can not scroll a few lines at a time, you have to go a whole page. I called Amazon support and the first thing they brought up was, well you need a kindle for that feature. They need to post that on the page so people will know. This is really annoying, and I believe they know it. I''m quite sure I''m not the only one bring this up. They are attempting to push kindles. Of which is screwed up in my opinion.

I got this a few weeks ago. Took a good dive in immediately, ready to go. Then, I get to Review Questions. The content does NOT always match what they size the Answer is. Its almost Day and Night. When you are trying to grasp GCPs'' infrastructure hierarchy, and then get to review, you may second guess yourself. Why? Like I said, content does NOT match the answers all the time which can really flub you up. This particular example was a pretty big error. The question was about granting admins rights to certain resouces, etc. Content says "By default, all resource objects, folders, etc inherit...and therefor cannot be changed" It''s backwards saying you CAN change. Things like that. So Week one in to training, I thought I would give it a chance, figuring that was a fluke. Nope, more where that came from. I literally looked up at the ceiling and raised my hands. Seriously? This bad? So, I checked and re-checked the GCP docs, and I was right and book has you thinking otherwise. Showed my co-worker at the office who passed the exam (not by using this book) and he read the questions I found (so FAR!) that was patently wrong. He even said "Wow!"

It''s one thing to make a spelling mistake, etc. It''s entirely another thing to completely contradict the contents in the book and Exam Review questions. Studying for an exam costs you; $200 for exam and the book price, to possibly NOT pass because of this. Now I know what you may be thinking: "Well if you know the content, why are you worried, after all you got the questions right" Because this is not a Google published book, I have to throw caution to the wind. Who know, maybe the content is wrong.

I will post my post-exam review to see if this book got any better and helped me prepare for the exam. As another person here reviewed this book, saying same thing. He/She is right, you should really pay attention, because it''s obvious, we have to check the writers'' work!

UPDATED REVIEW following Google Certification Exam:
Reduced to three stars because the review questions in the book are mostly nowhere NEAR as challenging as the questions on the real exam. The review questions and the practice exam that come with the book frequently include questions like, "The types of roles are: ... X) Primitive, predefined, and custom" where the other answers are wide variations that make the answers wrong. There is no question on the real test anywhere near so trivial a level.

The questions on the real test are almost all: "You are in situation X and need Y. What tool/commands should you use to accomplish your goal?" and the answers are never gimmes. There were questions on the exam that referenced commands (or even optional flags on commands) never covered in the book (I searched) which you have to guess at or get by elimination.

Rotely memorizing the listicles the book says you should "know" will not cut it. You will need to have a conceptual grasp of how the environment works and a good feel for how GCP "thinks."

(But I still say the chapters on Kubernetes suck.)

TL;DR: The exam is a lot harder than is presented in the book.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Title: Pretty good but some serious holes if you''re a beginner.
Thought about giving 3 stars [instead of 4] but there are some redeeming qualities.

The book pedantically leads you through every possible screen and menu for covered topics, and generally covers examples for the command line SDK as well. Where it fails is providing context or background information for the services or topics which you are administering. The chapters on Kubernetes are exceptionally difficult; I read the chapter closely three or four times before I realized it wasn''t me failing to understand what was presented, it was the book not presenting. Get this book for the access to the practice tests and the summaries that identify what the GCE test will cover, but plan to also get another source of information for depth (and for Kubernetes.)

I used the Sullivan guide as well as the Google Cloud Certified Associate Cloud Engineer All-In-One released November 2020 written by Hyman to take my exam this past week.

The official guide requires major revisions. It is outdated in many areas. There are some topics no longer covered and new topics in the objective map that are not in the text you need to watch out for. The newer guide fills in the gaps that the official guide misses. The other book also has a much better set of practice exams to prepare for your certification. Well worth the extra money.

I strongly suggest if you are in the market for buying a certification text to prepare for the exam, you buy one or both books to prepare, as both books are necessary to pass the exam. This book alone won''t cut it anymore.

This book is very successful at explaining cloud computing concepts in layman terms and mapping the suite of GCP products, but the practice questions are nothing like the ones on the actual exam. The practice questions will bring awareness to gaps in your knowledge and bring your attention to something that wasn''t explicitly detailed in the book, but ultimately to pass the exam you must use this book in conjunction with other resources like the documentation on the GCP websites. I also have to state that in addition to reading this book, I took a course on Coursera and I had a weekly discussion with an actual GCP practitioner, so he was giving me useful insights that weren''t in the book.

While I did pass the exam, I wasn''t very confident that my answers were correct on no more than 5 questions. In addition, there are various inconsistencies between the chapters in the book and the practice questions. For example, on page 218 the book says that the command "--split-by" specifies how to split traffic using either IP or cookies. One of the practice questions asks for that specific command but it states that "--split-traffic" is the correct command. There are a few other instances (pun intended) like that in the book.

Ultimately I think this book is a good resource, especially if you are new to cloud computing concepts. However, don''t rely solely on this book to pass the exam. Another note worth mentioning is that by the time you take the exam, some of the concepts may be outdated. For example, the book talks about Cloud Launcher but it was rebranded as Cloud Marketplace only a little while ago. The book also doesn''t go over newer products like Anthos and the slew of other products that Google is rolling out.

I’m about halfway in to the and the format and layout of the book makes it very easy to follow. My biggest issue stems of this book is the editing. It will tell you parameters for functions are one thing in the chapter and the answer in the review will say it’s something different. You end up having to go to GCP to figure out which one is actually correct. Or the the Answer key says A is correct because of “X”, But “X” was actually C not A. So you’re left wondering if A or C is the actual correct answer. If that makes sense.

I picked up a copy of this book when I was preparing for the Google Cloud Associate Cloud Engineer exam. I had access to a couple of online courses but felt I needed a hard copy book to add to my arsenal of tools (sometimes I can tune out of videos if I''ve been watching them for any extended period of time and get distracted) The book covers the contents of the exam blueprint well and has a great load of questions. They6 have some at the beginning of the chapter to pre-test your knowledge, then some at the end to ensure you took it all in. There are full practice tests that cover content from all sections. These questions are not exactly like the type on the exam but they are great for making sure you''ve taken in the course content. My favourite thing about this book is the online content that comes with it, you get access to a website/app that has all of the questions covered in the book, you can create your own banks of questions from it. I made sure I knew the answer to every question before I took the exam and I know colleagues of mine did the same thing and reported that it helped them greatly too. Dan makes the subject matter easy to understand and overall the book is well written, coupled with my online training this book was enough to pass the Google Cloud ACE exam without any issue.
