I love this book. The characters are well-developed and likeable, and the plot is interesting. First, let me say that I love the humor in this book. It is clean. It''s kind of like Shakespeare''s humor. People in every era would laugh at it. I also have to point out that I am usually not touched my romance, but I loved Miri and Peder. I think I liked their relationship so much because it was so innocent. It wasn''t mushy, as a lot of fictional romances tend to be. Peder never told Miri "I love you", but it was so obvious, that with everything he did, he loved her very much. He wasn''t the best communicator, but I can forgive him for that when he is so likeable. The only one I didn''t like was the king, not even after the Revolution. I highly recommend this!

I had high expectations of this book and they were not disappointed. I loved reconnecting with Miri and her friends after all these years. "Palace of Stone" continues to establish Miri as a strong, intelligent, independent character as she helps her friend Britta prepare for her wedding to the prince. Revolution threatens not just the wedding, but the fabric of society. Miri has to use her quick wit and courage to fight for what is right in what seems like a no-win situation.

Shannon Hale knows how to tell a story, and this book is no exception to the rule. The result is this beautifully told fairy tale with a unique, strong female voice -- no damsel in distress waiting for Prince Charming to rescue here here. I could not put this book down.

Book 2 of the "Academy Princess" series follows Miri on a journey to the world beyond her mountain home. City sights in a fictitious kingdom of Danland cause her to gape in wonder. Is the wives tale true that she will dance with the one she''ll marry at the royal ball? Lessons in ethics and the political struggle of a kingdom force decisions to be made and action to be taken. Readers will follow her search for answers and her discovery of what is right and just. Will she join the opposition to fight for what is right; help to resolve the struggle before war erupts; or escape to the safety of her mountain home? Will romance find her or continue to be elusive? The plot is realistically deep and involved and will keep the reader guessing what will come next. (The power of telepathy to speak through stone takes a step away from reality but adds a bit of magic to the tale.) Written in professional narrative prose by a talented author, this is a series that you really shouldn''t miss.

Not as strong as the other two, although still very enjoyable. The revolution happens too glibly and too easily. Getting the queen to speak up and support it was a plausible path to resolution, but popular movements tend to fail bloodily the first few times, and the cost, complexity, and probable failure should have been more clear. After the hard, complex, and unflinching realities of the first book, this second one was a bit disappointing.

That said, I love the series and have read everything Hale has written--and will continue to do so!

I think that, unlike some sequels, this second Princess Academy book is stronger than the first, which I liked. I enjoyed the more tangled plot and the "problem solving" required by both the characters and the reader. A story of adventure containing subterfuge, betrayal, and struggle. New characters are great and it also raises some political questions. Palace of Stone is one of those books that can be read at different levels from simple story to complex themes and promises to hold the interest of readers who may be reading at different levels.

Shannon Hale is a fantastic author. She is one of the best writers of young adult fiction that I have encountered in many many hours of reading.

That said, Palace of Stone failed to wow me as much as her other books have. Her writing style is still excellent, with deft turns of phrase and dialogue. Her setting was interesting, and I enjoyed seeing Miri attend a school that introduced her to ethical dilemmas both practical and philosophical. But it was just not quite enough to rate five stars.

I was hoping to get to know the original characters of Princess Academy better as well as seeing new characters. The queen was well drawn and a fascinating character, and I found Master Filippus an interesting addition also. Timon was less than impressive (which appears to be deliberate). I would have liked to see Miri''s relationship with Peder develop further, but they both get distracted with other pursuits.

Shannon Hale attempted the difficult by taking a familiar and well loved cast of characters and transplanting them into an entirely new environment, and on the whole she succeeds. She also does a good job at keeping continuity and weaving into being a courtly aspect of the world started in Princess Academy.

Altogether, this story is a very good read and worth the time taken-- though if this is your first introduction to Shannon Hale''s stories, I would suggest starting with Princess Academy and/or The Goose Girl.

Many people stay up late to read a story, to finish the story, to savor the story. I wonder how many feel like that after finishing Princess Academy: Palace of Stone? I surely did! Many books leave me vaguely dissatisfied. This one felt perfect. A wonderful blend of stone and silk. A hopeful ending, yet powerful. I highly recommend the series to you. Read them in order. Enjoy them. Stay up late to finish them. Think about them afterwards. Then, If you are like me, you will then want to find and read Shannon Hale''s other books. Fortunately, it looks like she has written a lot!
