Product Description

Stevie the Rifleman Flemmi was, for forty years, one of the most feared gangsters in Boston, and for much of that time, he was the partner of Whitey Bulger, the sixteen-year fugitive with a $2 million reward on his head who was captured in 2011. Flemmi has been convicted of ten murders and took the Fifth Amendment when asked about ten others. His cohort, Bulger, is charged with nineteen more. Rifleman is the story of Flemmi''s life of crime, as told to federal and state law enforcement after he pleaded guilty in 2003. The original document on which the book is based is called a DEA 6, and it ran 146 single-spaced pages, covering dozens of extortions, assaults, and murders, including two of his girlfriends, one of whom was also his common law stepdaughter. Supplementing the text are close to 300 photographs from Carr''s own collection. This is truly a must-have for any true crime fan.

About the Author

Howie Carr is the author of two New York Times bestsellers, The Brothers Bulger and Hitman. Before Bulger fled in 1994, Carr was such an implacable foe of the serial killing gangster that Whitey tried to kill him as he left his house in suburban Boston—an incident reported in 2006 on 60 Minutes. Whitey''s younger brother, Billy Bulger, then the president of the Massachusetts State Senate, publicly referred to Carr as the savage. Carr is also the host of a daily syndicated four-hour radio program heard throughout New England, and is a member of the national Radio Hall of Fame in Chicago. He won a National Magazine Award in 1985 for essays and criticism in Boston magazine.

This is a unique exploration of one of the most vicious criminal collectives in US history through debriefing of one of its masters, Steve Flemmi. A rifle infantryman from Boston in the Korean War he earned his Rifleman nickname from that period and after his 1955 discharge drifted into the vast underworld of Boston crime.

Flemmi had to relate all his criminal activity in the 2003-04 period on what is called a DEA-6. There’s a self-serving aspect as one might expect especially given Flemmi’s habit of forcing sex upon his teenage daughters-in-law. The other habit was the Rifleman’s services to corrupt law enforcement. Flemmi’s criminality fit with the FBI’s mission in the 1960s onward of protecting the Boston underworld in order to take down the Mafia, and Flemmi and his cohorts took control of a sizable chunk of Boston’s ineffective to dishonest police department as well.

The big name in Boston’s FBI-protected underworld was Whitey Bulger, and he and Flemmi made natural partners, “H. Paul Rico’s rat testifying against Zip Connolly’s rat,” as Carr nicely puts it. The US House Speaker John McCormack ordered the FBI to protect Whitey so his politician brother Billy Bulger could amass vast wealth and political power, and of course such protection helped Flemmi.

When you read about the FBI launching investigations keep in mind players like Robert Mueller were involved in covering up for H. Paul Rico and company. And also be fascinated by the voluminous photos included in the book.

This book was another side that you have not heard before. At least I thought so.It is a shame that this leech of society was not executed.By one of his own or the Government. Salemmi said it best when he said they were nothing but Jackals.Nobody was safe with those two vermin walking the streets of Boston.
About the book itself it was a good read but you had to keep an open mind. One minute he was a follower of Bulger and Co. the next he was a leader. In Flemmis own words that is.Not for one minute do I believe that he had any remorse for any of his victims as he claimed. He was not a minor player at all.he was partners in crime with Bulger.I wonder how much of a memory he will have for the Bulger trial. They both have many more skeletons in their closets. This book does hold your interest in a positive way.You already knew the end results and this book fills in on a lot of the blanks.Mr Carr did his homework on this book.He sure got his digs in there in showing his feelings towards this group of thugs.Well worth the time to read.

I looked forward to reading Carr''s new book on Rifleman Flemmi. Unfortunately, after the opening chapter actually authored by Carr the balance of the book was nothing more than Flemmi''s depositions. Compounding the problem with this book was that many names were blacked out to ''protect the innocent". In sum, I was hoping for a book actually authored by Howie Carr,,,not this..

I have read just about every book written about Janes Whitey Bulger, and have come to the conclusion that this author plays favorites which affects the story line. My feeling is that Mr Carr''s reporting days have tainted his outlook. I''m retired law enforcement (25 years) from the Bew England area and not sure of some of the facts mentioned. Amazon has some great books on this subject and I would recommend all of them except Mr Carr''s writings on this subject.

...this is just a recitation of FBI and Mass State Police debriefing reports from one of the most psychotic killers that ever lived. He wasn''t a gangster''s gangster like John Martarano was...he was just a serial killer that happened to be around a life that afforded him plenty of opportunity to do what he loved - kill, mutilate and dismember human beings. A true sociopath and a very boring retelling of his tale.
